I tend to have my nose stuck in a set of drawings all the time. I really wish I could say it was stuck in a good book, but honestly, I think my nose really likes being stuck in drawings. I find a set of architectural drawings fascinating. It doesn’t matter the age of the drawings, I could pour through them for hours. Drawings traditionally had been completed by hand, and only after the advent of the computer and relative ease of access to CAD (computer aided drafting) programs, has the computer based drawing overwhelmed the profession. I will post more on drawings and their history later.

As I pour through these drawings, I can’t help but notice the titles that are given to various rooms. Obviously the drawings differ from a commercial drawing to a residential drawing, all rooms are given names but, some room names are universal across types of projects. Meaning they occur in almost every drawing. The one room name that fascinates me the most is the name of the bathroom, or restroom, or toilet….. I’ve seen such a high variety of names for a bathroom (on architectural drawings), I do not know what they are really referred to anymore.

So, here is the list that I have seen thus far through my short career:

  • En-Suite
  • Bathroom
  • Restroom
  • Toilet
  • Mens
  • Womens
  • Half Bath
  • Powder Room
  • Powder
  • Bath
  • M
  • W

Any others?
